International Day of the Girl Child is an international observance day declared by the United Nations. October 11, 2012, was the first Day of the Girl.
The observation supports more opportunity for girls, and increases awareness of inequality faced by girls worldwide based upon their gender. This inequality includes areas such as access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination, violence and unfree child marriage. (source Wikipedia)
Today, I write for all the girls in the world. I celebrate them, I pray for them and I see them in the eyes of my own daughter.
I Am The Mother Of A Girl
I am the mother of a girl and I will protect her.
I am the mother of a girl and I will guide her.
I am the more of a girl and I will teach her self-respect.
I will remind her she is more valuable than all the riches in the world.
I will remind her that she is a gift from God.
I will guarantee her an education.
I will guarantee her a safe home.
I will promise her unconditional love.
And I will never break that promise.
I will teach her to be resourceful.
I will teach her to be productive.
I will teach her to be kind and generous.
I am the mother of a girl and I will demand of her to be responsible.
I will demand of her to be respectful.
I am the mother of a girl and I will empower her.
I will lead her by example,
but if I fail I will ensure she learns from my mistakes.
I am the mother of a girl AND I am the mother of a boy.
And to my boy I will teach him to treat girls as equals.
To respect them, praise them, be honest with them and care for them.
Because he has a sister, because he has a mother,
because he might one day have a wife and maybe even a daughter.
I am the mother of a girl and I am blessed to be her mother.
To Avahna, with love, Mom.
